Root canal treatment addresses inflammation or infection inside the tooth. It aims to relieve symptoms and, where possible, preserve your natural tooth.
What is endodontic treatment?
Inside each tooth is the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If it becomes deeply inflamed or infected, root canal treatment may be recommended. The affected tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. Finally, the tooth is restored to protect it and restore its function.
The goal is to preserve the tooth. We assess each situation individually through a clinical examination and imaging if needed.
When should you seek an assessment?
Persistent pain
Spontaneous or throbbing pain, or pain with hot, cold or chewing.
Infection or abscess
Swelling, tenderness, a small gum lesion or signs of infection around a tooth.
A weakened tooth
Deep decay, a crack, injury or an old restoration affecting the pulp.
Treatment, step by step
01 · Diagnosis
Assessment of the tooth, symptoms and imaging if indicated.
02 · Anaesthetic and isolation
Local anaesthetic is used, and the tooth is isolated for treatment.
03 · Canal cleaning
Affected tissue is removed and the canals are cleaned and disinfected.
04 · Sealing and restoration
The canals are sealed and the tooth is restored; a crown may be recommended in some cases.

It is generally carried out under local anaesthetic. Temporary sensitivity afterwards varies by case.
How many appointments will I need?
Depending on the tooth, infection and canal anatomy, treatment may take one or more visits.
Will I need a crown afterwards?
Not always. This depends on the remaining tooth structure and the forces placed on the tooth.
